Better to Give (Back) than to Receive

Did we not learn about helping others as children in order to feel good about ourselves? I can’t even count how many times I heard, “it’s better to give than to receive”! I think that is one of the most important things I learned as a child and is part of the reason why I have been helping others throughout my life. Since I met my husband, we make a habit of doing this together. It can be as small as noticing a neighbor and taking out their trash or baking them a cake to donate to a favorite charity. Collecting toys is a popular way to give back this time of year or find a family in your community to give them a complete Christmas if you can afford to do this. One year my sister in law went to the mission and served food during the holidays. All easy to do and easy to find someone to help. Keep your ears open to hear about those less fortunate. This year, giving families of Superstorm Sandy would be a wonderful way to give back. Do something that makes you feel good about doing it! Last year my foundation donated books to do “Mommy Gift Bags” at CHOP. Everyone got a personalized gift bag including my books. When I receive donations to my foundation it allows me to gift my books to organizations in bulk, for them to gift to families who may benefit from reading my story. At times I hand deliver and try to meet the families. Nothing like knowing that others really know what you are going through and care enough to help.
