Checking Your Personality

Sometimes, you and your doctor may not chime. It may be a new doctor or even an old one, but if for any reason things are not comfortable, you need to express this out loud. I remember feeling uneasy with one doctor; I felt as though he was very knowledgeable but had a terrible bedside manner. In other words, he spoke to me in medical terms and came across as very unfeeling about the emotional part of the illness and what I was going through. Mentally, you may not be ready to hear everything, and handling a patient with “kid gloves” can be the most appropriate and comforting way to discuss all scenarios. Sometimes, finding a great doctor is not just about his or her knowledge, it is also related to how they go about speaking with you. If you have any discomfort with your doctor, consider switching to another physician within the practice.  This can often be done with ease and allow you to get the care you need. Speak to someone in the office and/or a family member to help you make this type of important decision.
