Family Involvement – Taking the First Steps

Everyone reacts differently to different things. When we first find out about our child’s diagnosis we, as parents, need to completely digest  and process the information at hand. What will happen to my child, what will happen to us as a family, our other children, and in general with our daily lives. Some of  us will go through depression, some will get mad, or some will dive into the diagnosis full force. Whatever the reaction, we cannot forget to involve everyone in what is happening. Even the smallest of children need to understand some of what is happening and how it may affect them. We all want to know what is happening so that we do not feel left out. It is difficult to find the balance for everyone to understand, but with a little thought and maybe some professional help when needed, getting through what is in store for you as a family will hopefully make the transition easier.

Most often there is a long haul from the diagnosis to treatment to the final steps so keep all family members involved so that we can help and give a shoulder to lean on. For those family members who are younger, make sure that they do not feel left out of what is going on just because of their age. This journey will be a process and each person may have many different reactions throughout the journey. Recognize the importance of the difference between initial reactions and long term affects.
