Going Through the Motions

I recently have done a bit of traveling, nothing exotic, just Florida and back a few times for both business and pleasure. My husband and I go out often for dinner, enjoying both the social aspects as well as dining on good food. We have been in the bar and restaurant business forever and are actually easy to please, not demanding or critical unless there is a specific reason to be. I noticed something recently in two completely different areas, but it drew my attention and bothered me enough to put some thought into is for this blog. Both incidences, we went to the bar and ordered. I instantly noticed that not one bartender made eye contact pretty much at all with us unless they wanted to close out the check. One tried to cash us out before the other bartender mixed my cocktail?? In the other place, there was no eye contact or conversation, but order and pay without smile or a nice word in between. In either situation, they were not overly busy or had something going on that would kind of answer the question as to why they were this way? These observations got my full attention and I had only one answer to what was happening: they were just “going through the motions but were not really present.” I need to remind all of the people in the service business, we are here, we come out to you for a reason. I can stay home if I want no human contact. You are in the service business to “serve.” That means human contact, smile, greet, nothing too personal, but let us know we are welcome and you are happy we are there to keep you working. helpful tips
