Olympic Dreams

Saturday night, I was able to witness a heartfelt Olympic story. Kieran Behan, a gymnast from Ireland, is competing in the Olympic Games. He is not only making history for his country as the first male gymnast, but most important, he is a true example of heroism. How can you say, “I can’t do something” or “there is no way I can conquer this”, when you hear about a person like Kieran? It makes you wonder how you could ever say “never”. This young man is someone I can compare myself to on some levels, but on other levels, he has done more in his short life to overcome obstacles that I have never experienced. I admire his strength and determination above and beyond anything. He overcame being unable to walk twice in his life for years at a time, first from a procedure to remove a tumor in his leg and then having experienced brain damage from a gymnastics accident where he was told he may never walk again, and then numerous sports injuries; he is now in England representing his country. If this young man can do this to the extent he has, we should definitely strive to live by the phrase “Never Say Never”! Many of us have overcome obstacles, or have obstacles yet to come, and it’s inspirational stories like Kieran’s that remind us to keep persevering!
