School Time

With everyone starting school all over the country, I thought I would reflect on my days and being ill and getting ready for school. It was a wonderful time of year with hair cuts, new clothing, shoes, coats ready for winter and all the new school supplies, that even when I was ill this was exciting for everyone in the family. I would try to block out the fact that I was a bit slower than my friends on the playground, and that I could not always be in class, so that I would savor every day I could be there. I would keep everything nice and neat and organized so that I could find it all and even when I was homebound and I tried to keep up with my work.

Now, things are a bit different for children who are homebound, in the hospital or in a place like the Ronald McDonald House, since they supply you with rooms and computers and tutors when necessary. You can plug into your classroom if you are long term and ill, and  keeping up with your studies is much easier. You have to admire those students who still try since the medications and the treatments are so time consuming and painful that the last thing you want to do is homework or reading but they all do. Try to keep this in mind when you meet up with an ill child or a family who is struggling so that if they need some moral support you can be there. Also, remember that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month so keep those children close to your heart.
