2014 – The Year Of You – The Written Word

This post if from the October issue of the Everything’s Okay newsletter. In 2014, we will be highlighting stories and artwork from those who feel compelled to share. Whether you are a cancer patient, survivor, parent, friend, or volunteer, your voice is important! Please check out the post below for some great information!

The Written Word

Studies have shown that writing can play a significant part in the therapeutic process. Keeping a journal about your experiences and releasing your feelings not only help those who are afflicted with cancer, but it can also help those who are helping a loved one through their cancer journey. Youth can especially benefit as they may feel that they don’t have anyone to talk to that understands them and their feelings.

If you are struggling to find a starting point for your writing, check out www.writingthroughcancer.com. This site provides weekly prompts and can help you get an idea of what others might be going through as well.

You may think that you are not a writer, but that is not the point of this exercise. You have experiences and emotions that are important to you and keeping them locked inside can cause physical and emotional damage.

There is a great article here on cancer.net that will provide you with some tips on journaling.

If you aren’t comfortable sharing your story, maybe you can share how journaling has made an impact on your life. Remember, 2014 is the Year of You and your story may make an impact on someone else! We are all in this together!
