My Sick Friend

Today my husband and I went to see a very ill friend Maggie.

We just found out she has been very very ill for months and quickly went to be by her side. She looked remarkably well for someone in her condition and in pretty good spirits. Maggie is a strong person who has lots of fight in her and if anyone is going to beat the odds I will bet on her.

While we were sitting there and she was opening our gifts, she stopped to look at me and said, ” I have never been sick in my life and I never absolutely never miss work.” It has been two months and still fighting, Maggie said she now can really and truly understand what I must have been through. She told me that you take the small things in life for granted and she will definitely look at life in a different way from now on. What she was speaking about is things like regular shampoo, lotion, perfume, a good comb, and being able to eat and drink without becoming ill. Funny, she hit the nail right on the head, at least for me.

I told her washing my hair, putting lotion on my dry skin and smelling my perfume after a long awaited shower were the most important things to me when hospitalized for months at a time. These things are so small in our lives and we never think twice about any of them, but when you do not have them, they become very very appreciated. I wanted to share this with all of you since, yes, I remember vividly how that feels. A hot shower, wow, it was like giving me a diamond! Appreciate the small things. You never know when they will be taken away.
