Sounds All Too Familiar

Today I received a call from a friend of mine asking for some advice. Her 12 year old nephew is suffering from Ulcertive Colitis and has been since the age of 8 (sound familiar?). The doctors are at the end of his treatments and he is not really responding at this point. They are speaking of major surgery and are going for two more opinions next week. She wanted to ask for some advice to share with her sister and her nephew from the “horses mouth”.

I told her that although I am not a doctor and cannot give any medical advice, I felt that the doctors are giving them all the information and also encouraged them to go for other opinions. Then they can, as a family, make the right decision. I told her that her nephew will be relieved to know that he can be “cured” and allowed to continue with the rest of his life to grow and flourish. Right now he is at a standstill and suffering as well.

She then asked, “if you think back was there anything you would have done differently, or my parents should have done differently, although you cannot change it?” My answer – absolutely not! All the decisions were in my best interest and I never turned back, not once to question anything that was done. I even told her, although it is difficult to come to terms with. I thought this was all suppose to happen to me, to help me grow, and become who I am and what I was meant to do with my life. I was meant to help others and in this way had been through it all personally, so I know first hand what it feels like and what to do and say because of this. I encouraged her to give my book to both mom and her nephew so that they can read the story and know it can end well.
