July 2024
I needed to get my nails done. It was not my normal schedule and for that I was not happy, but it was the only time I could fit it in and get on the schedule for an appointment. Begrudgingly I went into the shop and sat down. As my nail tech began my service, I heard the door ring and a grandmother and her granddaughter came in. The granddaughter, who I learned was Emily began chatting that she wanted to have both her toes and nails done. Emily was loud and chatty which made me turn around. She was talking to others who were waiting or leaving and asking to check their colors and asking their names. I smiled while I listened. She insisted to her grandma that she wanted sparkly red. Grandma on the other hand kept trying to sway her to pink. Over and over again she tried her hardest to convince her that pink was the best choice but as I listened, Emily was sticking with red sparkles.
When it was her turn, they both walked past me as well as a few others getting services. I noticed she was special needs, so sweet and tiny for her age of 8, something I learned when she was asked. Her grandmother kept chatting with her and as they passed me she said hello, and she loved me.
As my heart warmed to this special little girl and I watched how her grandmother treated her, and how amazingly friendly and warm she was, I could not help but smile and feel her love of life. As the services continued they FaceTimed grandpa for a few minutes and then settled in for the rest of the time.
When I was finished with my nails I went over and introduced myself and told her how beautiful her nails and toes looked. They really did look bright and cheerful and told her so. She agreed and asked to see my nails. I had chosen an electric pink for the summer this visit and she was thrilled at the brightness. Emily then introduced me to her grandmother, her nail tech and told me she loved me. I told her I would see her next time and really meant it. I think she was the reason I went there today, off my normal schedule, reminding me to stay humble, know that we, are all loved, and that I am special. She made me feel that way.
Before I left, I told her grandmother that if everyone was this kind, the world would be a better place, and it warmed me to think that it could possibly happen. One step at a time….something to ponder.
