Facing Fears

Brunch MGD©My granddaughter, who is only 8 years old, told her mother and also me a few times that she wants to “face her fears.” At first, I could only laugh since my thoughts were, “What kind of fears can an 8 year old have,” right? Well, I do understand that there are so many firsts in life and that she has decided that she will not let anything stop her from embracing life. For me, that statement was a bit life changing. Every day we come face to face with things that we fear. We may or may not want to admit this, but we do. First bike ride, first day of school, first roller coaster, first taste of a new food. You have that moment of heart racing, maybe sweating, shaking, etc but for most of us we can take a deep breathe and roll with it. For others, these fears follow them throughout life and cripple them from growing. I admit that I also have fears but I face them head on and will never allow them to stop me from experiencing and growing, within reason of course. Just something small like first trip to the dentist, church, or first on the dance floor can push some over the edge. My advice, weigh them, head high and learn from each experience. Encourage those who may not understand.
